About this position

The Applied Aerodynamics Research Group at the University of Adelaide is offering four fully funded PhD scholarships to investigate distributed propulsion systems for future airplanes, as part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project. The research focuses on the integration of electric and hybrid propulsion technologies to reduce greenhouse emissions and improve aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency in aviation. The project is conducted in collaboration with Blue Spirit Aero, a European leader in distributed propulsion for general aviation aircraft, and aims to contribute to sustainable aviation and international Net Zero commitments. Successful candidates will work on aircraft design, optimisation of control strategies, and the replacement of conventional mechanical control surfaces.

Applicants must be citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the EU, or the US, or Australian permanent residents, and should hold or be close to completing a master of engineering, a first-class Honours degree, or equivalent in aerospace or mechanical engineering or a related field. Experience in aerodynamics, propulsion, or numerical/experimental methods is advantageous. The scholarship provides approximately AUD $54,000 per year for 3.5 years, including a standard stipend and a top-up. Candidates must secure an RTP scholarship in the university competitive rounds.

To apply, submit an expression of interest to Prof Maziar Arjomandi with required documents including citizenship evidence, degree certificates, transcripts, English proficiency, and CV. The application deadline is June 30, 2026.
