About this position

The University of Bern's Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences is offering two fully funded PhD positions in molecular virology, starting from 1 September 2026. These positions are part of a dynamic virology research group led by PD Dr. Carlos Ros, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of parvovirus infection and host-virus interactions at both cellular and structural levels.

The research projects will address complementary aspects of B19V pathogenesis. One project investigates a newly identified mechanism of viral shielding by host protease inhibitors, examining its impact on immune evasion, receptor interactions, and viral tropism. The second project explores how B19V infects placental trophoblasts, replicates, and breaches the maternal-fetal interface, utilizing advanced cellular systems, organoids, and tissue models. These studies aim to provide new insights into viral dissemination in the bloodstream and crossing of the placental barrier.

Successful candidates will join a scientifically stimulating environment with opportunities to develop an internationally competitive research profile. The positions are fully funded, with salaries provided according to Swiss National Science Foundation guidelines. The group offers access to state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration within the department.

Applicants must hold an MSc degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, or a related field. A strong interest in virology and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary setting are essential. Applications should include a letter of motivation describing relevant skills and research interests, a CV, and the names of two referees. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a personal interview.

To apply, send your application materials by email to PD Dr. Carlos Ros ([email protected]) or use the application portal. The deadline for applications is 12 June 2026. For further information about the research group, visit www.ros.dcb.unibe.ch.

This opportunity is ideal for motivated students seeking to advance their expertise in molecular virology, infectious diseases, and host-pathogen interactions within a leading Swiss research institution.
