About this position
University of Bern is recruiting two PhD students in the Gote-Schniering Lab for a Swiss National Science Foundation Starting Grant project focused on chronic lung diseases.
Position 1: Systems Immunology of Immune Ageing in Lung Fibrosis
This project investigates how immune ageing affects lung repair and contributes to pulmonary fibrosis. The work combines single-cell and spatial transcriptomics/proteomics, functional assays, mechanistic perturbation experiments, ex vivo 3D lung tissue culture models, and in vivo mouse models. It sits at the interface of immunology, lung biology, tissue regeneration, and systems medicine.
Position 2: Radio-Multiomics for Chronic Lung Diseases
This project develops computational approaches that integrate multiomics (sc/snRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, highly multiplexed immunofluorescence) with radiological/radiomic imaging and CT-derived features. The role emphasizes bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, deep learning, and precision medicine.
Eligibility highlights: For the first project, a Master’s degree in Biology, Biomedicine, Immunology, or a related field is required, along with experience in cell culture, molecular biology, and/or immunology. For the second project, a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field is required, plus strong programming and data analysis skills (Python/R). For both positions, strong motivation for interdisciplinary biomedical research and excellent English communication skills are expected. Experience with single-cell/spatial omics, microscopy, mouse models, radiomics, or machine learning is an advantage.
Funding and terms: The positions are 100% fixed-term PhD roles funded through an SNSF Starting Grant project. No stipend amount is listed.
Application window: Deadline is 2026-05-10. Start date is 2026-06-01.
How to apply: Send a single PDF containing your motivation letter, CV, academic record with grades, BSc and MSc diplomas, and two reference letters to [email protected].
