As a PhD student at imec, you will engage in fundamental and advanced research across a wide range of domains, including 6G and wireless IoT communication, automotive systems, CMOS and beyond CMOS, 3D system integration, advanced nano-interconnects, high-speed analog/RF, neuromorphic computing, next-generation logic devices, novel memory concepts, quantum computing, data science, data security, GaN power electronics, image sensors, life sciences, radar sensing, photovoltaics, power to molecules, sensor solutions, silicon photonics, solid-state batteries, system and IC design, thin-film flexible electronics, and wearables.
imec acts as a host research institute for PhD and postdoc research in partnership with five Flemish universities: KU Leuven, UGent, VUBrussel, UAntwerpen, and UHasselt. Dual degree agreements with international universities further expand opportunities for collaboration. PhD students are supported by expert professors from both national and international institutions, ensuring high-quality supervision and mentorship.
Through the NanoIC pilot line, imec also participates in European collaborations to strengthen the semiconductor industry, offering internships, PhD positions, expert courses, and interuniversity research programs. NanoIC-related topics include machine learning for epitaxy analysis, thermal integrity in packaging, advanced design technology co-optimization, parasitic extraction, and area-selective deposition for nanoscale structures.
Applicants should have or be about to complete a Master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) in a relevant field. Belgian applicants require at least a distinction; international applicants should consult the detailed admission requirements. Strong English communication skills and a collaborative, creative, and persistent approach are essential.
PhD positions are fully funded, providing a stipend and access to state-of-the-art infrastructure. imec’s vibrant community includes over 700 PhD students from more than 40 countries, offering a rich network for personal and professional growth.
