PhD Opportunity on Materials Development for Carbon Capture Research

We have an open PhD position in my research group ( Hybrid3DLab www.hybrid3dlab.com ) in collaboration with Dr. Curran Crawford
( Institute for Integrated Energy Systems IEVsic https://lnkd.in/gbc6cC5T ) & Dr. Haris Ishaq, Ph.D., P.Eng.
( IEVsic ) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the UVic Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Victoria . The successful candidate will work on the Design and Additive Manufacturing of Microporous Architected Materials for CO2 Capture. The position is set to start in May 2025, with applications accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Project: The project will be utilizing additive manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing) and computer fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to guide the design and development of a novel microporous carbon absorbing structure for CO2 removal applications. The student’s research will include: 1) CAD design, 2) fabrication, and 3) optimization of mass flow in the CO2 adsorbing microporous architected materials.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Candidate with or about to obtain a Master’s degree is preferred.
- Existing background in computer aid design (CAD) is desirable.
- Existing background in 3D printing is desirable.
- Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation or related modelling techniques is desirable.
- Knowledge of powder sintering processes is desirable.
- Strong writing, conversational and presentation abilities in English.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse team and with project partners.
- The student must be able to pass a government security clearance to work with our NRCan partner (please indicate in your application if you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident).

To apply, send a single PDF document containing: 1) a one-page cover letter describing your relevant (research) experience and motivation for the position, 2) a CV, 3) a full transcript, and 4) the names and contact information of two referees to [email protected] with the subject line “CarbonCapture-PhD-Position”. Only selected applicants will be contacted for an interview.
