About this position
This PhD opportunity at Kingston University focuses on the advanced modelling, design, and manufacturing of composite structures using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques. Composite materials, particularly carbon and glass fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP and GFRP), are increasingly used in high-performance engineering applications due to their superior strength-to-weight ratios and customizable properties. The project will investigate the behaviour of these materials under various loading and environmental conditions, aiming to optimize their design and manufacturing processes for applications in automotive, aerospace, and other engineering sectors.
Research areas include polymer chemistry, structural chemistry, automotive engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, glass, polymers, and textiles. The successful candidate will work within the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment, benefiting from access to state-of-the-art laboratories and computational resources. The project will be supervised by Dr S Koutsonas, an expert in composite materials and advanced modelling techniques.
Applicants should have a strong background in mechanical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or polymer science. Experience with FEA/CFD modelling and composite manufacturing processes is highly desirable. International candidates may need to demonstrate English language proficiency. The position is open for applications until 4 March 2026.
Funding details are not specified; applicants are encouraged to check with the university for potential scholarships or studentships. To apply, submit your application through the Kingston University portal, including your CV, academic transcripts, and a personal statement. For further information, contact the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment.
