About this position
This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, offers an exciting opportunity to develop new algorithms for molecular simulations on quantum computers. The research is highly interdisciplinary, combining quantum computing, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Students will focus on quantum chemistry-inspired method development, ultrafast dynamics algorithms, or quantum error mitigation schemes, with the flexibility to tailor the project to their interests and background.
The project involves deriving new methods, developing both classical and quantum computing code, simulating experiments, and running algorithms on actual quantum hardware. Training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills is provided, and collaboration with the Danish quantum project HQC2 may be possible. Applicants should have strong coding skills (preferably Python), a solid mathematics background, and experience in algorithm development.
Optional experience in quantum chemistry, quantum dynamics, or quantum information/computing is advantageous. The position is open to UK, EU, Horizon Europe, and international students, with UK students receiving a competitive UKRI TechExpert stipend of around £31k per year for four years. Studentships at the UKRI base rate are available for EU and international students, and those with external funding are encouraged to apply.
The University of Southampton is committed to equality, diversity, and sustainability, offering support for personal circumstances and part-time study. The application deadline is July 31, 2026, with an earlier deadline for international applicants. For further information, contact Dr Karl Michael Ziems at [email protected].
