ALICE: 4-year PhD Position in Developmental Neurosciences Université libre de Bruxelles in Belgium

The Université libre de Bruxelles is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position in Developmental Neurosciences as part of the ALICE (Acquisition and Learning of Infant Conscious Experience) project, recently funded by the FNRS. The research aims to investigate how consciousness emerges and develops in the infant brain, utilizing electrophysiological (EEG) markers. The successful candidate will join the multicultural and collaborative LulLABy group within the Centre for Research in Cognition and Neurosciences (CRCN), and will have access to the BabyLab, which is equipped with advanced behavioural and neuroimaging facilities including Biosemi and eye-tracking technologies.

The PhD student will work under the close supervision of Dr. Adélaïde de Heering (PI) and collaborate with Professor Axel Cleeremans. Responsibilities include participant recruitment, testing, and analysis and interpretation of infant EEG data. The position is fully funded for 48 months by the FNRS, with a net salary of approximately 2500 euros/month, including social and medical benefits. Continued funding is contingent upon passing an intermediary exam at 24 months.

Applicants must hold or be currently enrolled in a master’s degree or equivalent in neurosciences, cognitive sciences, or a related discipline. A strong academic track record and hands-on experience with developmental research (such as internships, master’s thesis, or relevant research experience) and/or EEG are required. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB is essential. Candidates must demonstrate excellent skills in both French (for communication with French-speaking parents and daycares) and English (for scientific oral and written communication).
