About this position
The Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) is a leading institution in Norway for artistic education and research, comprising six departments: Arts and Crafts, Dance, Design, Fine Art, Opera, and Theatre. The Academy fosters a vibrant, multidisciplinary environment and supports artistic research from the bachelor to doctoral level. The PhD program in artistic research at KHiO is designed to advance artistic practice and knowledge production, encouraging innovative research that results in new works of art, performances, and disciplinary insights. Artistic practice is central to the PhD, accompanied by reflective analysis to share working methods and insights.
The Academy of Opera, which holds national responsibility for opera education in Norway, offers world-class faculty, stage facilities, and a curriculum that integrates singing, musical coaching, acting technique, language, and stage productions. Students benefit from collaborations with professional directors, conductors, orchestras, and production teams, as well as close ties to the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet and other music institutions. The PhD research fellowship in Opera is open to candidates wishing to explore and develop opera as a contemporary art form. Eligible applicants include singers, pianists, conductors, composers, librettists, directors, choreographers, set designers, and dramaturges.
The position begins on October 1, 2026, and is contingent upon admission to the PhD program in artistic research at KHiO. Daily work is based at the Academy, and proficiency in Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish at least at level A2 is required; language training is available if needed. Applicants must demonstrate recognized artistic work or research and typically hold a master’s degree in performing or creative arts, though comparable qualifications may be considered.
Applications must be submitted electronically via the jobbnorge.no portal, including a completed application form, documentation of education and qualifications, a comprehensive CV, and documentation of artistic practice (up to 10 works). All materials must be submitted by the deadline and can be in a Scandinavian language or English. The fellowship is a three-year full-time position with a starting salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, automatic salary progression, and pension fund deduction. For subject area inquiries, contact Dean Anna Einarsson at [email protected].
An information webinar for applicants will be held on November 5, 2025.
