About this position
The Maj Institute of Pharmacology Polish Academy of Sciences is seeking an Assistant Professor (postdoctoral researcher) for the Laboratory of Pharmacogenomics, Department of Molecular Neuropharmacology, in Krakow, Poland. This full-time position is funded by the National Science Centre OPUS 23 project, focusing on the genetics of glucocorticoid receptor (GR)-dependent behavioral traits in humans. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team investigating the molecular mechanisms by which stress influences mental health, with a particular emphasis on gene regulation, pharmacogenetics, and computational genomics.
The research project aims to elucidate how the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and glucocorticoid signaling contribute to stress-induced mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Using large-scale population datasets, including the UK Biobank, the team will analyze genome sequencing data, clinical information, and phenotypic traits to identify genetic variants and biological pathways regulated by GR. The work involves processing and analyzing raw genotyping and gene profiling data, conducting meta-analyses of transcriptome results, and developing bioinformatics tools for high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing. The project also includes building a database of GR-dependent gene expression profiles in human nerve cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines, and performing functional experiments in iPSC-based cellular models.
Key responsibilities include supervising junior team members, planning and executing research tasks, preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting findings at scientific conferences, and maintaining rigorous documentation of bioinformatics work. The position requires strict adherence to the Code of Ethics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and compliance with institutional regulations.
Applicants must have a PhD in pharmaceutical or related sciences, obtained within the specified timeframe, and meet mobility requirements. Candidates should demonstrate a strong publication record, experience in basic research, proficiency with the UK Biobank platform, and expertise in genome sequencing and association studies. Advanced English skills, motivation for research, teamwork ability, and ethical conduct are essential. Additional assets include interdisciplinary collaboration, research stays, and teaching experience.
The position offers a competitive annual gross salary of PLN 140,000, with employment for 13 months and the possibility of extension. Applications should be submitted electronically to [email protected] by 17 December 2025, including all required documents as detailed on the institute's career website. The selection process involves document analysis and possible interviews, with only selected candidates contacted.
This opportunity is ideal for researchers interested in advancing the understanding of stress-related mental disorders and contributing to the development of novel psychoactive compounds. For more information and application details, visit the institute's career page or the official position link.
