About this position

Maastricht University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is recruiting an Assistant Professor with a Focus on Academic Writing. This is a faculty-level teaching-focused academic position embedded in the Literature and Art (L&K) department, the Arts, Media, and Culture (AMC) research program, and the faculty’s Teaching and Learning Hub.

The role centres on academic writing, higher education, writing pedagogy, and the evolving role of writing in the age of generative AI. The successful candidate will support BA and MA students, advise academic staff on writing assignments and feedback practices, contribute lectures and workshops, provide thesis-writing support, and help develop digital resources and curriculum integration around writing.

Preferred academic background includes a PhD in English (Literature), Rhetoric, or a closely related discipline. The post is aimed at an experienced teacher and active researcher with a developing publication profile and international recognition, who is comfortable making academic writing the main focus of teaching rather than their own specific research area. Strong English proficiency is required (IELTS level 9 or equivalent), Dutch is preferred, and the university expects a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and support for neurodiverse learners. The candidate should also be willing to obtain the Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within two years.

Employment terms include an 18-month contract at 1.0 fte with the prospect of a permanent contract, a gross monthly salary of €4728–€6433 (38 hours/week), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, and other staff benefits.

Deadline: 2026-05-17. Apply through the AcademicTransfer vacancy page and upload the required documents: PhD certificate, full CV, motivation letter, teaching statement and vision on teaching academic writing, teaching evaluations if available, a writing sample, and referee contact details. For questions, contact Prof. Dr. Aagje Swinnen at [email protected].
