About this position

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Appalachian Laboratory is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Watershed and Water Resources Science. Outstanding candidates at the Associate Professor level will also be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized, externally funded research program focused on watersheds and water resources, with particular relevance to the Appalachian Mountain region or the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Research areas of interest include hydrologic, biogeochemical, and climatic processes affecting water quality and availability; drivers and dynamics of floods, droughts, and sediment transport; surface-groundwater interactions; hydrologic responses to global change drivers such as land-use and climate change; empirical and data-driven studies of water chemistry and quality; development and assessment of best management practices and restoration strategies; and the application of advanced tools such as environmental sensors, remote sensing, hydroinformatics, big data, and machine learning. Integration of hydrologic science with water management, ecological or socio-economic risk assessment, and decision-support systems is also encouraged.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Environmental Science, Hydrology, Biogeochemistry, or a related field, and demonstrate a record of scientific excellence and productivity. Evidence of the potential to secure external funding, dedication to mentoring and inclusive graduate education, and a commitment to engaged scholarship and collaboration are required. The position offers the opportunity to join a collaborative and inclusive academic environment at UMCES.
