About this position
This fully funded PhD project at University College London focuses on advancing the use of bio-surfactants in consumer products by overcoming key techno-economic barriers. Currently, most surfactants in household products are derived from fossil sources, but bio-surfactants offer a more sustainable alternative. The project aims to upgrade bio-surfactants using continuous adsorption processes, integrating large-scale laboratory experimentation with rigorous process modelling and AI-enabled optimisation.
The research will be conducted within a comprehensive techno-economic and life cycle assessment framework, ensuring that both economic viability and environmental impact are considered. Students will gain hands-on experience in process development, experimental validation, and digital modelling, acquiring highly transferable skills relevant to both academia and industry. The Department of Biochemical Engineering at UCL provides a vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary expertise. The studentship is fully funded for four years, covering tuition fees (at the Home rate, with additional support for international students), a tax-free stipend at an enhanced rate (at least £23,466 in 2026/27, increasing annually), and a Research Training Support Grant for additional training, project costs, conferences, and travel.
Applicants should have a strong background in chemical or biochemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field, and an interest in process modelling, laboratory experimentation, and sustainability. The successful candidate will be expected to submit their thesis within the four-year funded period.
The application deadline is 5th January 2026 at 13:00 UK time. Applications must be submitted via the official UCL EPSRC Doctoral Training portal.
For further information or technical queries, applicants can contact the DTP Manager at [email protected].
