About this position

A fully funded PhD position is available at the University of Glasgow as part of the NorthWest Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NWB DTP). The project focuses on developing advanced tissue culture models to study Staphylococcus aureus colonisation and infection, specifically mimicking the in vivo nasal epithelium. The research aims to address gaps in understanding how S. aureus establishes persistent residence in the nasal niche and transitions to disease, using physiologically realistic models that incorporate features such as cilia, mucus, and the nasal microbiome. The student will receive multidisciplinary training in tissue and bacterial culture, microscopy, molecular techniques, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication.

The supervisory team includes Dr Justine Rudkin (University of Glasgow), Dr Caroline Weight (Lancaster University), and Prof Robert Gray (University of Glasgow). Applicants must hold or be about to obtain a first or upper second class UK honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant science field. International students are welcome, with 30% of places reserved for them, but must cover their own visa and health surcharge costs. The studentship covers tuition, a stipend of at least £20,780, and laboratory expenses.

The application deadline is 4th January 2026. To apply, candidates must use the University of Glasgow Admissions Portal and complete the NWB Recruitment Information Form, uploading all required documents. For further details, see the project and application links or contact [email protected].
