This unique initiative is designed to attract internationally recognized scholars whose research addresses critical national and global challenges in strategic priority areas. The program is open to researchers at the rank of Associate or Full Professor who are currently working and residing outside Canada.

The Impact+ Research Chairs program emphasizes research excellence and tangible impact, providing long-term funding and institutional support to advance ambitious and transformative projects. Chairholders will have the opportunity to build and maintain exceptional research teams, collaborate with partners across sectors and borders, and drive the translation of discoveries into applications, commercialization, and social and economic benefits for Canada and the world.

Strategic priority research areas include advanced digital technologies (AI, quantum, cybersecurity), health and biotechnology, clean technology and resource value chains, environment and climate resilience (including the Arctic), food and water security, democratic and community resilience, manufacturing and advanced materials, and defence and dual-use technologies. Applicants whose research spans multiple areas are encouraged to submit a single application and clearly articulate the alignment of their work with these priorities.

Successful candidates will be appointed to a tenure-track position at the rank of Full Professor, or as an Associate Professor with promotion to Full Professor within two years. The Impact+ award provides $4 million or $8 million in funding over 8 years, with a possible four-year extension at 50% of the original value, reflecting the varying costs of research across disciplines. This funding is intended to support ambitious research, team building, and impactful outcomes.

Eligibility requirements include being internationally based at the time of application, a recent track record of research accomplishments, and a strong interest in contributing to Canada’s strategic research priorities.
