About this position

UNC’s Sustainable Energy Research Consortium (SERC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is hiring a Catalysis Scientist to lead the High-Throughput Experimentation in Catalysis Core Laboratory (HiTEC).

This is a research-professional role focused on catalysis, high-throughput experimentation, thermal catalysis, photochemical catalysis, and electrochemical catalysis. The position supports reaction setup, product analysis, and scientific research efforts, including reaction design and analysis. The lab environment includes inert-atmosphere gloveboxes, high-pressure gas manifolds, parallel reactors, evaporators, gas chromatographs, and mass spectrometers.

The role involves technical oversight and management of the core laboratory, including financial management, supplies purchasing, routine maintenance, protocol development and optimization, and user training. It is a strong fit for candidates with experience in analytical chemistry, laboratory operations, and catalysis research, especially those interested in sustainable energy and reaction discovery methodologies.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant post-baccalaureate degree is required, or a relevant bachelor’s degree plus 3+ years of relevant experience may substitute. Applicants should have at least five years of laboratory experience in catalysis and analytical methods, including gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Experience with lab safety, chemical hygiene, and instrumentation maintenance is required; electrochemical, photoelectrochemical, high-pressure reactor, mentoring, and lab management experience are preferred.

Funding/compensation: this is a permanent full-time staff position with a hiring range of $70,000–$100,000 and a comprehensive benefits package.

Application window: posted on 2026-05-01 with an application deadline of 2026-05-28.

Apply via the UNC PeopleAdmin posting and upload the required CV/resume, cover letter, and references.
