The Chinese Institutes for Medical Research (CIMR) in Beijing is a newly established research organization dedicated to advancing both basic and translational medical research. CIMR’s mission is to address fundamental challenges in human health by leveraging cutting-edge technology and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations among scientists, physicians, entrepreneurs, and investors. The institute is committed to cultivating future medical scientists through innovative education and training programs, and it operates within a science-centered framework that promotes research and educational innovation via novel funding mechanisms. CIMR collaborates closely with Capital Medical University (CMU), a leading medical university in Beijing with extensive hospital affiliations, to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and clinical application.

The institute is unique in its structure, combining elements of academia, enterprise, and clinical practice, and is focused on talent cultivation, research outcomes, and public engagement. CIMR’s approach to medical education emphasizes equality among faculty and a shift from bureaucracy to academic excellence. The institute is actively working to improve clinical training and teaching effectiveness, drawing on international experience and bringing in experienced doctors from abroad. A pilot program, the ‘Jieping Class,’ integrates clinical education with scientific research, allowing students to join interdisciplinary research groups and select doctoral mentors for extended research periods.

This program aims to produce physician-scientists skilled in cell biology, immunology, engineering, pharmaceuticals, and public health. CIMR also supports young doctors through its Young Physician-Scientist Training Program, encouraging participation in both research and clinical practice. The institute has provided initial funding for 25 research projects and 31 youth innovation projects across multiple departments and affiliated hospitals. Notable researchers, such as HongHu Zhu, have joined CIMR for its innovative culture and generous research support, contributing to breakthroughs in leukemia treatment and cancer genetics.
