About this position

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Liverpool is seeking skilled and enthusiastic postdoctoral researchers to join its Research and Development team. The team is involved in innovative research projects focused on vessel decarbonisation, advanced vessel propulsion systems, alternative fuels for extending the range of electric vessels, energy storage solutions, artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, digital twins, and blockchain technology for maritime operations and maintenance. This postdoctoral position is part of the Maritime Future Fuels Training Plan project, which aims to create and deliver the UK's first nationally scalable, regulation-aligned training framework for alternative marine fuels and hybrid-electric propulsion.

The project is a collaborative effort involving leading vessel operators, academic institutions, maritime training providers, and technology developers, all working together to address a critical skills gap in the safe handling, design, and operation of low- and zero-emission maritime technologies. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading dissemination and exploitation activities, with a focus on developing long-term implementation and delivery pathways for the national Maritime Future Fuels Training Plan.

Applicants should hold a PhD or have equivalent professional experience in a relevant engineering discipline, such as Naval Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or Engineering Management. The position is fixed-term and available until 31 March 2026. Candidates who are awaiting their PhD award will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30, with a salary increase to Grade 7, spine point 31 upon confirmation of their PhD.

The University of Liverpool is committed to workforce diversity and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those from underrepresented groups. This is an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers interested in maritime decarbonisation, alternative fuels, and advanced vessel technologies to contribute to a nationally significant training initiative.
