Are you fascinated by how the human sense of touch enables intricate interactions with the world? The Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is offering an exciting PhD opportunity under the supervision of Dr Benjamin Ward-Cherrier. This project focuses on developing spiking neural networks (SNNs) for tactile perception using neuromorphic computing, specifically for a robot hand capable of advanced sensorimotor tasks.
This PhD will explore the potential of neuromorphic touch sensors, which operate similarly to biological sensory neurons, producing spikes that encode information with remarkable efficiency. The project aims to design, train, and implement SNNs that interpret tactile data generated by these sensors, enabling a robot hand to understand and respond to different textures, shapes, and pressures in real time. Leveraging spike-based computation, your work will play a crucial role in closing the sensorimotor loop, allowing the robot to sense, process, and act solely through spike-based communication—paving the way for more agile, efficient, and responsive robotic systems.

Candidate requirements:
Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of a merit at master’s degree level (or international equivalent) in a science, mathematics or engineering discipline. Applicants without a master's qualification may be considered on an exceptional basis, provided they hold a first-class undergraduate degree. Please note, acceptance will also depend on evidence of readiness to pursue a research degree.
