About this position

This fully-funded PhD position at KU Leuven focuses on congestion management and connection queue optimization in distribution networks, addressing critical challenges in the energy transition. The successful candidate will join the Electa research group at the Ghent campus, part of EnergyVille—a collaboration between KU Leuven, VITO, imec, and UHasselt—dedicated to sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. The research environment is dynamic, international, and closely connected to both industry and academia, offering extensive opportunities for collaboration and professional growth.

The project is embedded within a prestigious multidisciplinary consortium of Flemish researchers specializing in electrical engineering, energy economics, energy regulation, and energy law. The doctoral research will center on developing advanced mathematical optimization methods for network capacity calculations, congestion mitigation, and connection queue management under uncertainty. Candidates will have the flexibility to shape their research agenda, focusing on sub-topics and methods of interest, and will benefit from existing software and state-of-the-art frameworks developed by the Electa group.

The transition to a sustainable energy sector is essential for achieving European climate and competitiveness goals, but systemic bottlenecks—such as grid congestion—are slowing investments in renewable energy and electrification. This PhD project aims to address these bottlenecks by optimizing the integration of new electricity demand and generation into the power grid, ensuring safety and quality standards are maintained. The research will contribute to the state of the art in power systems, optimization, and energy management, with direct impact on industry and public R&D projects.

Applicants should hold a Master degree in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field, with excellent academic results. Strong interest in energy, prior experience in power systems modeling/analysis, and proficiency in optimization and estimation methods are highly valued. Programming skills in Matlab, Python, GAMS, or Julia are a significant plus. Good English communication skills are required, and prior research or publication experience is a bonus. Candidates must be able to work independently and collaboratively, and should be willing to live in Belgium.

KU Leuven is the largest university in Belgium in terms of research funding and is ranked among the top European universities. The Electa research group is a key player in energy research, offering a stimulating environment with access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. The PhD position is full-time and fully-funded for four years, with full social security, health insurance, laptop, and funding for international conferences or schools. The initial appointment is for 12 months, with extensions based on positive evaluation. Successful completion leads to a PhD degree in Engineering.

The starting date is 1 October 2026, with some flexibility. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, providing a respectful and socially safe environment. For accessibility or support questions, applicants are encouraged to reach out via the provided contact email.

To apply, submit your application online via the KU Leuven job portal. Prepare your CV, motivation letter, and relevant academic documents. For further information, contact Prof. dr. Marta Vanin at [email protected]. Ensure your application is submitted before the deadline of 27 June 2026.
