This Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of antigen-specific T and B cells in the developing and malignant central nervous system (CNS). Supervised by Professor Richard Gilbertson and Dr Elizabeth Cooper, the project aims to uncover fundamental mechanisms of immune regulation within the CNS, focusing on how immune responses differ between development and disease, particularly in childhood brain tumours.

The CNS is a uniquely regulated immune environment, with tightly controlled responses in the developing brain. Preliminary data from the research group indicate that antigen-specific T and B cell responses at CNS borders are functionally impaired in childhood brain tumours. The project hypothesises that dysfunction of the meningeal lymphatic system leads to persistent antigen exposure and altered adaptive immune priming. To address these questions, the group has developed novel engineered neoantigen models, enabling precise tracking of T and B cell interactions during brain development and disease.

This research will provide new insights into antigen-specific immunity in the developing CNS and establish broadly applicable models for studying immune responses across pediatric neurological disorders. The project involves advanced techniques such as necropsy and dissociation of mouse tissues for flow cytometry and molecular analysis, as well as cell culture and in vitro immune cell assays. The studentship is fully funded for four years, covering University fees and an index-linked stipend starting at £22,500 per year.

Applicants should hold or expect to gain a First or Upper Second Class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as Biomedical Sciences, Immunology, Oncology, or Neuroscience. Relevant research experience, gained through Master's study or laboratory work, is strongly encouraged. Both UK and overseas students are eligible to apply.
