About this position

Project Overview: This PhD project at Aston University investigates the mechanisms of stress response in healthy aging, focusing on the dynamics and composition of stress granules (SGs) in cells. SGs are aggregates of proteins and RNA that form in response to stressors such as heat, nutrient deprivation, or oxidative damage, protecting cellular components and enabling recovery. However, as organisms age, their ability to respond to stress declines, leading to the accumulation of damaged macromolecules and impaired proteostasis. This research aims to decipher how SG dynamics change with age and how these changes impact organismal health and lifespan.

Research Objectives: The project will use C. elegans as a model organism due to its short lifespan, genetic tractability, and suitability for high-resolution live microscopy. The objectives are: (1) Assess age-dependent SG composition using mass spectrometry, RNA-seq, SDS-PAGE, and Western blotting; (2) Determine how impaired SG function affects aging by studying wild-type and SG gene mutants for lifespan, fecundity, locomotion, and aging markers; (3) Evaluate age-related changes in stress recovery by monitoring SG dynamics in young and old animals.

Academic Environment: The research will be conducted within the College of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University, Birmingham, UK. The project is supervised by Dr Zita Balklava and Dr M Repici, who can be contacted for further information. The successful candidate will be expected to visit the Aston campus regularly and engage with the research community.

Funding and Eligibility: Home tuition fees are covered for this position. Overseas applicants may apply but must pay the difference between Home and Overseas tuition fees (£17,712 for 2026/7). There are associated consumables costs, which should be discussed with the supervisor before applying. Applicants must have a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, or a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree and a Merit or Distinction in a Masters degree. Overseas qualifications will be considered if equivalent. English language proficiency is required.

Application Process: Applications must be complete and include transcripts, certificates, a research statement, personal statement, CV, two academic references, evidence of English language proficiency, and a copy of the passport. Overseas applicants must confirm their ability to fund the tuition fee difference. Interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams. Apply online using the provided link and select 'Research - Health Sciences' from the application form options. Contact the supervisor to discuss consumables costs and upload confirmation of this discussion.

Contact: For formal enquiries, contact Dr Zita Balklava at [email protected]. For application process queries, contact the Postgraduate Admissions team at [email protected].
