About this position
The Doctoral Assistant in Cultural Studies (60%) position at KU Leuven offers a unique opportunity to join the interdisciplinary research unit of Literary Theory and Cultural Studies. The unit is renowned for its large research teams and diverse Master’s programs, focusing on areas such as cultural policy, creative practices (including literary culture, popular culture, dance, performance, photography, film, and graphic novel), and cultural memory and identity (covering memory studies, migration, heritage, and digital cultural practices).
The successful candidate will be actively involved in both research and educational activities. Research responsibilities (60% of the mandate) include supervising master’s theses in Cultural Studies, participating in research seminars, the Hermes Summer School, and symposia, as well as developing independent research within the field. Educational and organizational tasks (40%) involve assisting with courses such as Introduction to Cultural Studies, Methods of Cultural Studies, and Capita Selecta, organizing the OPO Master’s thesis process, supervising the ‘literatuurpakket’ in the Dutch-language Schakelprogramma Culturele studies, participating in teaching for a Master’s course aligned with the candidate’s profile, and covering invigilation duties during examination periods.
Applicants must hold a PhD in the humanities, with a strong interest in theory of cultural studies, qualitative and quantitative research methods, popular culture, theatre and performance, or post/decolonialism. Fluency in both Dutch and English is essential, as is the ability to supervise theses and papers in Dutch. Experience in teaching and supervising students is required, and candidates should enjoy working collaboratively within a team. The role also expects candidates to be proactive in seeking further research funding.
The appointment is part-time (60%) at the postdoctoral level (salary scale 44) for three years, with the possibility of extension up to six years based on positive evaluation. The envisaged start date is 1 September 2026, though alternative dates can be discussed. KU Leuven is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity and equal opportunity for all.
