About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellow position in the Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, focusing on the cellular mechanobiology of rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis. The successful candidate will join the Elewaut lab, a multidisciplinary and international research group embedded within the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research (IRC). The lab investigates the underlying disease processes in rheumatic diseases, with a particular emphasis on the mechanoinflammatory microenvironment of the synovial joint.
The PhD project will explore the crosstalk between stromal and immune cells in the synovial joint, using primary synovial cells from arthritis patients, CRISPR knock-outs, phosphoproteomics signaling, in vivo arthritis models in transgenic mice, and advanced molecular biology tools such as single-cell RNA sequencing and proteomics. The research aims to identify key proteins regulating joint health and disease, building on the lab's longstanding interest in external risk factors for arthritis development.
Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, or a related biological field with a biomedical or molecular biology focus (e.g., Pharmaceutical Sciences or Bioengineering). Experience with molecular and biochemical research and/or bioinformatic data processing of -omics datasets is preferred, or candidates should be motivated to develop these skills. Excellent English communication skills, familiarity with MS Office, and experience with R and/or Python are advantageous. A FELASA certificate (animal research) is required or must be obtained in the first year. Candidates should demonstrate punctuality, accuracy, analytical and problem-solving skills, independence, teamwork, and a proactive attitude. Willingness to apply for competitive PhD grants (e.g., FWO PhD fellowship) is expected.
The position offers an initial 12-month contract, extendable up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is free of personal income tax. Ghent University provides structured doctoral training, specialized courses, transferable skills workshops, and regular progress evaluations. Staff benefits include training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
To apply, send your CV, diploma, motivation letter, and relevant documents to Dr. Thibaux Van der Stede ([email protected]) before April 27, 2026. Late applications will not be accepted. For more information, visit the Elewaut lab page or contact Dr. Van der Stede directly. Applications can also be submitted via the online portal.
