About this position

Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is offering a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health. The position is based within the research group of Professor Peter Geldhof and focuses on parasitic infections in the poultry sector, a growing challenge due to changes in housing systems and limited treatment options. The project aims to generate robust data on the efficacy of anthelmintics in poultry, develop validated diagnostic tools for field monitoring, and establish evidence-based treatment thresholds to guide responsible anthelmintic usage. This research is conducted in collaboration with ILVO, ensuring a multidisciplinary and practical approach to sustainable control of worm infections in laying hens.

The doctoral candidate will be expected to perform high-quality research, publish findings in scientific journals, present at conferences, and collaborate with academic partners. The ultimate goal is to obtain a doctoral degree. The position offers an initial contract of 12 months, extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation. The fellowship provides a salary at 100% of the net AAP member rate, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Additional benefits include extensive training and education opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree, preferably in Veterinary Medicine, Bio-engineering, or a related field, and demonstrate a very good command of spoken and written English and Dutch. Candidates should be capable of conducting independent research, publishing articles, and working collaboratively. To apply, submit your CV, diploma copy, and motivation letter to Prof. Peter Geldhof at [email protected] before July 15, 2026. Late applications will not be considered. Ghent University encourages applications from all backgrounds, maintaining an equal opportunities and diversity policy. For further information, contact Prof. Geldhof directly.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in veterinary science, parasitology, epidemiology, animal health, and bioengineering, offering a supportive academic environment and comprehensive funding. The research will contribute to sustainable solutions for the poultry industry and advance knowledge in infectious diseases and animal science.
