About this position

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, invites applications for a full-time Doctoral Grant in Medical Microbiology within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science and the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Institute. Under the supervision of Professor Sandra Van Puyvelde, the successful candidate will conduct pioneering research focused on the genomics of coli disease in sub-Saharan Africa. This project aims to advance understanding of bacterial pathogens and their impact on public health, leveraging state-of-the-art bioinformatics and molecular biology techniques.

As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles, and contribute to teaching and research support tasks. The research will provide a genomics perspective on coli disease, utilizing high-performance computing environments and advanced bioinformatics tools. The position offers a dynamic and stimulating environment at Campus Drie Eiken in Antwerp, with access to a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School.

Applicants must hold a Master degree in Bio-engineering, Biomedical sciences, Pharmaceutical sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Biotechnology, or equivalent, with excellent academic results. Essential skills include experience with bacterial pathogens in laboratory settings, strong bioinformatics abilities (including programming in R, Python, and Bash), and familiarity with bacterial bioinformatics databases. Experience in international environments, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate independence, teamwork, analytical thinking, and fluency in English. Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply.

The doctoral scholarship is offered for two years, with the possibility of renewal for another two years following a positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance, or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

To apply, submit your application online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by 16 March 2026. Attach a motivation letter and academic CV. For questions regarding the application process, contact [email protected]. For job-specific inquiries, reach out to Prof. Sandra Van Puyvelde at [email protected].

This opportunity is ideal for candidates seeking to contribute to impactful research in medical microbiology, genomics, and global health, within a vibrant academic community.
