About this position

The University of Cologne, one of Europe's largest and oldest universities, is offering a doctoral position in plant immunity within the Saur Lab at the Institute for Plant Sciences, CEPLAS. The Saur Lab is part of SFB1403, CEPLAS, and FOR5682, providing access to state-of-the-art research facilities and a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment. The research group investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying plant–microbe interactions, focusing on the molecular functions of cell surface-localized receptor homologs in regulating interactions with pathogenic fungi and other microbes.

The successful candidate will perform molecular and biochemical experiments to characterize the functions of cell surface-localized receptor homologs, particularly SRF3, in regulating microbial invasion of dicots (Arabidopsis thaliana, Nicotiana benthamiana) and monocots (barley). The research will involve the use of available genetic material and the generation of mutant and chimeric constructs to mechanistically assess SRF3's role in microbe-triggered immunity, cell death-related immune responses, and iron-related processes. Techniques include transcriptomic (RNAseq), phenotypic (plant immunity measurements and microbial proliferation assays), and biochemical assays (protein-protein interaction assays).

Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent degree in Biology or a related field, with expertise in molecular plant–microbe interactions and/or plant immunity. Experience in molecular cloning, protein–protein interaction, and/or RNAseq analyses is considered an advantage. Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken, are required.

The position is funded at 65% TV-L 13 (German public sector pay scale) for a fixed term from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2029.
