About this position

The Subsurface Environmental Processes Group at Eawag and ETH Zürich is offering a doctoral position focused on the study of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) pathways through soil–groundwater interfaces, aiming to advance safer drinking water solutions. PFAS are highly persistent synthetic chemicals increasingly found in soils and aquifers, posing significant challenges for groundwater quality and public health due to their extreme stability and mobility. This project seeks to unravel the fundamental mechanisms controlling PFAS fate and transport in coupled soil–aquifer systems, which remain poorly understood despite widespread contamination.

The PhD research will quantify how soil physico-chemical properties and episodic recharge events influence PFAS fate, transport, and transformation. The student will employ a range of laboratory experimental and modeling techniques, including the integration of machine learning and process-based models. Measurements will be guided by and compared with the modeling developed in the project, with the goal of advancing scientific understanding of PFAS mobility in soils and aquifers. The findings will contribute to predictive modeling, risk assessment, and the development of sustainable groundwater protection strategies.

The successful candidate should have a strong quantitative background in physics, engineering, or related fields, and a desire to work experimentally at the intersection of physics, chemistry, and engineering. Experience or interest in combining experimental research with mathematical modeling is essential. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary and fast-paced, offering opportunities to gain skills in analytical and computational technologies, learn about fundamental physical and chemical processes in porous media, and interact with world-class collaborators in environmental chemistry, reactive transport, and hybrid modeling approaches.

Supervision will be provided by Prof. Dr. Joaquin Jimenez-Martinez (Eawag and ETH Zürich). ETH Zürich offers numerous benefits, including public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, and attractive pension plans. The university values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, promoting equality of opportunity and nurturing a respectful working and learning environment. Sustainability is a core value, with ongoing efforts toward a climate-neutral future.

Applicants should submit their online application via the ETH Zurich portal, including a CV, full transcripts from undergraduate studies (Bachelor and Masters), a brief statement of research interests (1-2 pages), and at least two (preferably three) letters of reference. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered. Review of applications begins June 5th and continues until the position is filled. For questions regarding the position, contact Prof. Dr. Joaquin Jimenez-Martinez at [email protected] or [email protected] (no applications).
