About this position
The University of Essex invites applications for a Doctoral Research Fellow position within the BRAINET MSCA Doctoral Network, hosted by the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. This opportunity is based in the Unconventional Communications and Computing Laboratory (UC2), led by Dr Michael T. Barros, and focuses on cutting-edge research in networked distributed neural interfaces for interference-based brain stimulation.
The successful candidate will register for a PhD at the University of Essex and undertake doctoral research aligned to one of two Essex-hosted BRAINET projects. Project DC4 explores multiphysical communications for networked power and information transfer, including magnetoelectric, NFC, ionic media, and optics, with a focus on characterising biophysical limitations of the human head and designing optimised systems. Project DC5 develops a multimodal communication system for subdural brain implants, enabling networking through efficient signal processing, data compression, and evaluation of safety, reliability, and long-term viability.
As a Doctoral Research Fellow, you will contribute to project deliverables, produce publishable outcomes, and participate in BRAINET training and consortium activities. The position includes planned international secondments: DC4 involves placements at Aalborg University and INRIA, while DC5 includes INRIA and G.TEC. The annual salary ranges from £38,249 to £45,413, reflecting the MSCA Doctoral Network funding structure.
Applicants should hold a good honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Signal Processing, Physics, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline. A Masters degree in these fields is desirable. Essential skills include strong quantitative abilities, research-grade programming proficiency (Python/MATLAB), and experience with rigorous computational experiments and reproducible workflows. Familiarity with communication systems, signal processing, biophysical channel modelling, and neural/physiological signals is advantageous. Evidence of strong research aptitude and rapid learning is required. Candidates must be eligible to register for a PhD at Essex and comply with the MSCA mobility rule, which restricts prior residence or activity in the UK.
The University of Essex is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, welcoming applications from all sections of the community, especially underrepresented groups. For further information and to apply, visit the University of Essex vacancies portal or contact [email protected]. The application deadline is 15 March 2026.
