About this position

Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) position in Harmonic Analysis, based in the Mathematics Research Centre at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The position is supervised by Associate Professor Timo S. Hänninen, who leads the Harmonic Analysis Research Group. The research focus is on mutually agreed topics in harmonic analysis, with opportunities to publish and present results in leading analysis journals and conferences. The doctoral researcher will also assist in teaching and undergraduate supervision, contributing to the vibrant academic community at Tampere University.

The Mathematics Research Centre comprises 8 professors, 5 university lecturers, 3 postdoctoral researchers, and approximately 15 doctoral researchers. The broader Unit of Computing Sciences employs 45 professors and 55 full-time teachers, with a total staff of 440. The work is conducted on-site at the Hervanta campus, encouraging active participation in the local research community. Tampere University offers a multidisciplinary and high-impact research environment, with competitive edges in technology, health, and society.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in mathematics, preferably with specialization and thesis in analysis. Relevant coursework includes measure theory, real analysis, harmonic analysis, and functional analysis. Mathematical maturity, interest in research, and fluency in English are essential. Prior research experience is not mandatory but may be advantageous. The successful candidate must fulfill the admission criteria for the Doctoral Programme in Computing and Electrical Engineering (DPCEE) and secure study rights for the doctoral degree at Tampere University.

The position offers a 4-year employment contract, aligning with the target completion time for doctoral studies. A starting salary of €2,714/month is provided, with increases based on demonstrated PhD progress. Staff benefits include occupational health care, flexible work schedules, modern teaching facilities, and a personal fund for sports and cultural activities. Tampere, Finland’s second largest city area, offers a unique combination of international academic environment, easy access to city life, culture, and nature.
