About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a doctoral researcher position in Democracy & Environmental Transition within its Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE). The FHSE is renowned for its interdisciplinary research culture, bringing together experts from over 20 disciplines to address social, economic, political, and educational issues. This position is part of the Climate Nexus Framework Convention, a five-year initiative (2025-2030) in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, aiming to make Luxembourg climate-ready by integrating research, education, policy, and public engagement.

The doctoral researcher will contribute to the Social Readiness pillar, focusing on citizen science, sustainable lifestyles, and youth engagement. Key responsibilities include reviewing and evaluating existing environmental participatory processes, designing a participatory process tailored to the Luxembourg context, supporting implementation in collaboration with the Ministry, creating synergies with other Climate Nexus pillars, and conducting comparative evaluations. The role is closely linked to the co-development and continuity of the Klima Biergerrot, in line with the coalition agreement (2023-2028).

Applicants should demonstrate strong initiative and adaptability, a keen interest in deliberative and participatory processes, and solid knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Experience in designing or evaluating participatory processes is considered an asset. Language requirements include at least B2-level proficiency in the language of the thesis, with accepted certificates as specified by the university.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and inclusive research environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The position is based at the Belval Campus and provides access to excellent infrastructure and collaboration opportunities with European institutions, innovative companies, ministries, local governments, associations, and NGOs.

The contract is for 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), with a yearly gross salary of EUR 43,445. The planned start date is 1 September 2026. Applications should include a CV, cover letter detailing motivation and alignment with the topic, and transcripts of all university-level courses taken. Early application is encouraged, as applications are processed upon reception. Apply online through the University of Luxembourg HR system; applications by email will not be considered.
