About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a doctoral researcher position in Democracy & Environmental Transition within its Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE). The FHSE is renowned for its interdisciplinary research culture, bringing together expertise from humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, and social and educational sciences. The faculty’s research and teaching focus on social, economic, political, and educational issues, aiming to contribute to an inclusive and resourceful society.

This PhD position is part of the Climate Nexus Framework Convention, a five-year initiative (2025-2030) in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity. The project aims to make Luxembourg climate-ready by integrating research, education, policy, and public engagement to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic challenges. The doctoral researcher will contribute to the Social Readiness pillar, which promotes citizen science, sustainable lifestyles, and youth engagement.

The role involves evaluating existing environmental participatory processes, designing a participatory process tailored to the Luxembourg context, supporting implementation in collaboration with the Ministry, creating synergies with other Climate Nexus pillars, and evaluating the process from a comparative perspective. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of environmental science, political theory, and public administration, with a focus on real-world impact and policy development.

Applicants should demonstrate strong initiative and adaptability, a keen interest in deliberative and participatory processes, and solid knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Experience in designing or evaluating participatory processes is an asset. Language requirements include at least B2-level proficiency in the language of the thesis, with accepted certificates detailed on the university’s admissions page.

The University of Luxembourg provides a modern, dynamic, and inclusive research environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The position is based at the Belval Campus and offers a yearly gross salary of EUR 43,445 for doctoral researchers. The contract is for 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), with a planned start date of 1 September 2026.

To apply, candidates should submit a CV, cover letter outlining motivation and alignment with the doctoral topic, and transcripts of all university-level courses. Early application is encouraged, as applications are processed upon reception. Applications must be submitted online via the HR system; email applications will not be considered. The University of Luxembourg is committed to equality, inclusivity, and respect for all employees and students.
