The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Digital Environmental History of Africa. This position is based at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), an interdisciplinary research centre renowned for its innovative approaches to contemporary history, digital methods, and public dissemination. The successful candidate will develop and complete a PhD thesis focusing on natural environment-economy-society relationships in Africa from the mid-19th to early 20th century, utilizing digital and computational methods.

Key research perspectives include AI-assisted methods for historical research, such as knowledge graphs, large language models, and computational data extraction, as well as quantitative and spatial analysis of historical sources. The project also welcomes engagement with travel accounts as historical sources for environmental questions. The role involves contributing to C²DH's research activities, participating in seminars, workshops, and scientific events, and supporting teaching and student supervision in courses related to digital history or economic history.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in History, Environmental History, Digital Humanities, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in computational approaches. A strong interest in the economic and environmental history of Africa and AI methods is essential. Candidates must be willing and able to work in an interdisciplinary environment at the intersection of history, data science, and digital humanities. Familiarity with AI methods, large language models, or knowledge graphs is required, or a strong willingness to engage with these methods. Experience with quantitative and spatial methods, prior engagement with African history, historical political economy, or environmental history, and experience with structured data environments or digital humanities infrastructure are advantageous. Language proficiency at B2-level in the thesis language is required.
