About this position
The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Environmental Data Visualization. This position is based at the Luxembourg Centre for Socio-Environmental Systems, a research hub dedicated to advancing sustainability and equity through interdisciplinary approaches. The centre focuses on understanding the interconnectedness of human activities and environmental systems, addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion.
The successful candidate will contribute to the Living Atlas Luxembourg (LAL), a dynamic platform designed to map and analyze interactions between land, climate, water, energy, and society. The project aims to support evidence-based sustainability transitions and institutional decision-making by visualizing trade-offs, synergies, and interdependencies between Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key responsibilities include developing innovative methods for visualizing complex environmental and socio-spatial data, analyzing SDG-related indicators, designing and developing data integration tools, dashboards, and visual interfaces, and exploring new ways to communicate uncertainty, risk, and complexity in sustainability research. The role offers the opportunity to shape your own PhD topic within the project framework, with potential areas such as interactive mapping of land-use, climate, and socio-economic dynamics, data storytelling, and decision-support tools for sustainability transitions.
Applicants should hold a master's degree in data science, geography, environmental sciences, urban planning, computer science, design, or a related field. Essential skills include data analysis and programming (Python, R), GIS and spatial analysis, and data visualization. A strong interest in sustainability and environmental systems is required. Language proficiency at B2-level in the thesis language is mandatory, with accepted certificates as specified by the university.
The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and inclusive research environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The position is full-time (40 hours per week) on a fixed-term contract of 36 months, based at the Belval Campus. The yearly gross salary for doctoral researchers is EUR 41976.
To apply, submit your application online through the HR system, including your CV, cover letter, transcript, portfolio or list of relevant projects, and a one-page proposal outlining a potential PhD topic. Early applications are encouraged as they are processed upon reception. The university promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
