About this position
The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Information Processing Science within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. This opportunity is part of the RISK-AI project, which aims to advance responsible and trustworthy use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare across the Nordic and Baltic regions, focusing on compliance with evolving European regulations such as the AI Act and European Health Data Spaces (EHDS).
As a Doctoral Researcher, you will engage in post-graduate research to develop a doctoral thesis in a vibrant, multidisciplinary environment. Your work will address the central question: How can healthcare organizations better identify, understand, and manage AI risks to enhance trustworthiness and support responsible AI use? The project seeks to conceptualize 'responsible risk' by integrating clinical, social, organizational, and technical risk components with best practices for risk assessment, tailored to organizational context and AI maturity.
Key responsibilities include designing and conducting research to identify, assess, and manage AI-related risks in healthcare, focusing on capacity-building strategies and organizational readiness. You will contribute to developing and refining the responsible risk concept, create validated tools and methods for skills and capacity building, and participate in activities promoting AI literacy and responsible adoption among healthcare stakeholders. Collaboration with academic and societal partners is central, and you will disseminate research through publications and presentations, including drafting at least four scientific articles and presenting at scientific events.
The University of Oulu offers a supportive research community, wellness benefits (ePassi), flexible work-life balance, and career development opportunities. The Buddy Programme and Spouse Network assist newcomers in settling into Oulu. The institution holds the HR Excellence in Research label, recognizing its commitment to researchers' working conditions and careers. Finland is renowned for its high quality of life, safety, education system, and competitive economy.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Information Processing Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Health Informatics, or a related field, completed before the start date. Excellent English skills are required, demonstrated per University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) standards. Basic Finnish knowledge is appreciated. Candidates should have independent research capability in AI, healthcare digitalization, or related areas, experience in international and multidisciplinary environments, knowledge of AI governance, risk management, trustworthy AI, or EU AI regulation, and experience in qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method research. Understanding of healthcare contexts and ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders is expected.
The position is fixed-term for three years, starting 1 March 2026, with a starting gross salary of 2600-2900 € per month (before taxes), based on Finnish university demand level chart (levels 2–4) plus up to 50% personal performance component. Salary will be revised as thesis work progresses. Wellness benefits and support programs are included. A 6-month trial period applies.
To apply, submit your application online by 20 February 2026, including a cover letter, CV (max 2 pages), publication list (if any), contact information for two references, and a short research plan (max 2 pages) addressing AI risk dimensions and responsible risk in healthcare. Applications must be written in English. Eligible applicants will be invited to interview, and all applicants will be notified of the results. The University of Oulu welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds.
