About this position
The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary research institution in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Combustion and Advanced Engine Simulation. The successful candidate will join the Materials and Mechanical Engineering (MME) Research Unit within the Faculty of Technology, and work closely with the Machine and Vehicle Design (MVD) research group. This group is renowned for its pioneering work in sustainable digitalization and zero-emission technology for future mobility solutions.
The research project focuses on hydrogen combustion and advanced engine simulation technologies, aiming to address both fundamental and applied challenges in the field. Key responsibilities include performing advanced 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of hydrogen/oxygen jets and combustion in argon-based environments, developing and validating simulation frameworks for closed-cycle engine modeling, and collaborating on thermal management and knock mitigation strategies for high-performance engines. The role also involves contributing to gas-path control and argon closed-loop system design, validating simulation models against experimental data, and disseminating research findings through publications and presentations.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, energy engineering, or a related field, completed within the last five years. Essential qualifications include strong knowledge of combustion processes, CFD modeling, and thermal management, proficiency in simulation tools such as OpenFOAM, Converge, or GT-Power, excellent analytical skills, and experience with system-level modeling and optimization. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team are required. Experience in hydrogen combustion, thermal stress modeling, CFD tool development, experimental validation, system-level control and optimization, and engine design is considered an advantage.
The University of Oulu offers a supportive academic environment, excellent research infrastructure, and opportunities for professional development. The position is fixed-term for three years, starting from 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting gross salary is approximately 2600-2900 € per month (before taxes), based on Finnish university demand level chart (levels 2-4) plus a personal performance component. Additional benefits include wellness benefit ePassi covering sport, culture, and well-being, HR Excellence in Research label, and support programs for newcomers. A trial period of six months applies.
Applications must be submitted via the electronic application form by 30 April 2026 (23:59 Finnish local time). Required documents include a motivation letter (max. 2 pages), CV, and an initial research plan. Only applications submitted through the online system will be considered. Later in the recruitment process, candidates should be prepared to provide contact information for two referees. The University of Oulu welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and promotes flexibility and work-life balance.
