About this position

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary research university in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in MRI research within the Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology at the Faculty of Medicine. This position is part of a strategic spearhead project funded by Infotech for 2026–2028, focusing on advancing quantitative MRI through computational and engineering innovations. The project, titled "Harder, better, faster, stronger MRI: Computational and Engineering Advances for the Future of Quantitative MRI," aims to accelerate MRI data acquisition and improve reconstruction accuracy by integrating sparse sampling, neural network–based reconstruction, and virtual imaging platforms. The ultimate goal is to develop fast, robust, and clinically viable quantitative MRI methods that provide reliable biomarkers for enhanced clinical diagnostics.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary research team operating at the interface of the university and university hospital, and will be part of the Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (FAME). This collaborative environment brings together physicists, engineers, mathematicians, and applied scientists, offering excellent opportunities for professional growth and networking. Main responsibilities include conducting research in clinical-related MRI, collaborating with national and international partners, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

The position offers a fixed-term contract for three years, with a starting gross salary of approximately 2600–3200 € per month (before taxes), based on Finnish university salary levels and including a performance-based component. Additional benefits include wellness support, career development opportunities, and assistance for settling into Oulu. The University of Oulu is recognized for its supportive research environment and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a related field, completed before the start date. Good English skills are required. Experience in experimental or clinical MRI, programming (Matlab, C/C++, Python), and research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or inverse problems applied to imaging is appreciated. Applications must be submitted in English and include a cover letter, CV, certificates, transcripts, and contact information for two referees. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2026.

For further information, contact Professor Miika Nieminen at [email protected].
