About this position
The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Reused Concrete Carbon & Durability. This PhD opportunity is embedded within the national Climate Nexus Framework Convention, aiming to advance climate readiness and global cooperation. The project is hosted by the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM), specifically within the interdisciplinary research group of the Department of Engineering and Department of Physics and Materials Science.
The research focuses on quantifying carbon intake and its effects on the properties of concrete produced through direct reuse. A key aspect involves developing a novel bio-based solution for healing pre-existing cracks in concrete, utilizing microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) in collaboration with the Department of Physics. The tasks include designing and executing a laboratory campaign for carbon capture on concrete, developing a durability model for reused concrete, and implementing rehabilitation strategies using bio-based solutions.
This project aims to contribute to the development of circular processes in the concrete industry, promote long-term carbon sequestration in concrete structures, and reduce carbon emissions associated with the construction sector. The research environment at the University of Luxembourg is modern, dynamic, and inclusive, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The university offers excellent infrastructure, a unique urban campus, and partnerships with European institutions, innovative companies, and a wide range of non-academic partners.
Applicants should have a Master's degree or equivalent in civil engineering or a related area, with a solid understanding of concrete structures and modelling. Knowledge of concrete durability and circular economy is advantageous. The position requires curiosity, passion for scientific research, openness to interdisciplinary collaboration, critical thinking, and good research ethics. Language proficiency at B2 level or higher in the thesis language is required.
The contract is for 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), based at the Belval Campus. The yearly gross salary for doctoral researchers is EUR 43445. Applications should be submitted online through the HR system, including a CV, cover letter, and transcript of university-level courses. Early applications are encouraged, and all qualified individuals are welcome to apply. The University of Luxembourg is committed to promoting an inclusive culture and upholding equality and respect for all employees and students.
