About this position
The University of Eastern Finland is offering a four-year Doctoral Researcher position within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND Doctoral Programme for Advancing Forest-Based Bioeconomy (DP-FOBI), based at the Joensuu campus. The research theme centers on efficient enzymatic conversion of biomass to bio-based compounds, supporting the transition toward a circular bioeconomy. The project focuses on enzyme-driven processes for converting renewable lignocellulosic biomasses into bio-oils and high-value biobased chemicals, specifically exploiting non-phosphorylative metabolic pathway enzymes for converting pentose sugars (xylose and arabinose) into valuable bio-based chemicals. Key enzymes such as xylonolactonase and pentonate dehydratases of the Weimberg/Dahms pathway are Fe-dependent, and their Fe-dependency will be studied using native mass spectrometry. Structural biology and enzyme engineering are integrated to improve catalytic efficiency, aiming to convert pentose sugars into polymer precursors and fine chemicals.
The position offers supportive supervision by experienced researchers, access to comprehensive doctoral training, DP-FOBI activities (workshops, summer schools, research visits, secondments), and opportunities for collaboration within a vibrant interdisciplinary network. Researchers will benefit from close cooperation with industry and societal partners, enhancing the real-world impact of their research. UEF provides extensive occupational health care, staff training, discounts on campus restaurants, access to the national healthcare system, and high-quality, affordable childcare and school services.
Employment is for a fixed term of four years, with a total working time of 1,612 hours per year and a four-month probationary period. The salary follows the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions system, including a living allowance (EUR 3,200/month), mobility allowance (EUR 87/month), family allowance (EUR 300/month for eligible researchers), paid leave, holiday bonus, travel allowance (EUR 1,500/year), additional travel allowance (EUR 10,500 total), research costs (EUR 6,000 total), and special needs allowance/support if required.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology, or a closely related field, must not have a doctoral degree at the time of the call deadline, and must meet the MSCA mobility rule (less than 12 months in Finland during the past 3 years). Language skills requirements of the Doctoral Programme in Science, Forestry and Technology at UEF must be fulfilled. Applicants should demonstrate understanding of biophysical and bioanalytical methods for protein characterization, excellent scientific writing and oral communication skills in English, strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities, teamwork skills, and genuine interest in laboratory-based research. Prior experience in protein expression and purification, familiarity with X-ray crystallography and/or native mass spectrometry are considered advantages. Proof of English proficiency is required if not evident from academic credentials.
To apply, submit all application materials in English via the UEF electronic recruitment system by 10 August 2026. Use the provided application templates from the DP-FOBI website. Required appendices include a certified copy of the Master’s degree diploma, transcript of records, CV, electronic copy and summary of Master’s thesis, Ethics Self-Assessment form, motivational letter, and proof of English proficiency. Applications not adhering to format or language requirements will not be considered. The selection process includes eligibility and ethics check, external review, interviews, final selection decision, and appointment. Applications will be evaluated by external, independent experts representing relevant DP-FOBI research areas.
