Doctoral Researcher (U-KNOW-project: Open-Source Investigation in Ukraine and Palestine Conflicts) Tampere University in Finland

Tampere University invites applications for a fully funded doctoral researcher position within the U-KNOW project, focusing on open-source investigation in the Ukraine and Palestine conflicts. This three-year, full-time PhD opportunity begins on 1 September 2026 (or upon agreement) and is situated within the International Relations discipline, affiliated with the Visual Studies Lab. The U-KNOW project, funded by the Finnish Research Council, investigates the role of open-source intelligence and visual methods in conflict knowledge production, specifically examining the post-2014 Russian invasions of Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in Palestine.

The doctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Dr. Rune Saugmann and a co-supervisor, collaborating closely with a postdoctoral researcher and senior experts in digital methods and conflict. The research aims to explore visual open-source ways of making knowledge about conflict, develop novel methodologies for studying open-source knowledge-making, and conceptualize how conflict knowledge relates to alliance patterns, state identities, and geopolitical interests. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their research topic independently within the project framework, engaging with open-source actors and contributing to public engagement activities such as media appearances, website maintenance, op-ed writing, infographics, and podcasts.

The position offers a vibrant, international, and interdisciplinary research environment, with access to the Visual Security hub and TASER research seminar community. The doctoral researcher will benefit from a personal study and supervision plan, including a detailed annual work schedule. Project activities are primarily teamwork-based, requiring a positive attitude and willingness to learn collaboratively with new technologies.

Applicants must hold a higher university degree (MA-level) in international relations, digital media studies, political science, international political sociology, critical data studies, or a related field by the application deadline. Strong motivation, commitment to the U-KNOW project, proficiency in English, and willingness to travel to research sites are essential. Knowledge of digital conflict dynamics, qualitative and visual methods, and language skills in Arabic, Ukrainian, or Russian are advantageous but not mandatory. The position is fully funded for three years, with a starting monthly salary of approximately €2,774, increasing as doctoral studies progress.
