About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student position in CFD simulation of Carbon Capture and Utilisation, based in Stockholm, Sweden. This opportunity is part of the ACCELERATE research center, which aims to drive the transformation of the chemical industry towards sustainable practices by advancing Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technologies. The project focuses on developing and applying advanced multi-physics CFD simulation tools to model and optimize the capture of biogenic CO2 from point sources, with applications in solvent-based absorption processes within complex geometries such as spray towers and foams.

The research will involve detailed modeling of transport phenomena in both gas and liquid phases, heat and mass transfer across interfaces, multi-component vapor-liquid equilibrium, and chemical reactions. The developed simulation tools will be validated through close collaboration with experimentalists within the ACCELERATE center. The project also envisions extending the simulations to CO2 recovery and utilization processes, contributing to the broader goal of phasing out fossil feedstocks in the chemical industry.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Christophe Duwig, an expert in the field. The position is fully funded, offering a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, with full-time employment for up to four years and access to a range of employee benefits. The working environment at KTH is international, creative, and dynamic, with a strong emphasis on equality, diversity, and professional development.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a second cycle degree (e.g., master's) or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at the second-cycle level), or possess equivalent qualifications. A background in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Combustion Science, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates should have hands-on experience with CFD tools such as OpenFOAM, Fluent, StarCCM+, COMSOL, or in-house codes, preferably including chemical reactions or multi-phase flows. The ability to modify CFD codes is considered a merit. Proficiency in English equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory.

Application Process: Applications must be submitted via KTH's recruitment system and include certified copies of diplomas, grades, and language certificates (with translations if not in English or Swedish), a CV (maximum 2 pages), an application letter (maximum 1 page), and representative publications or technical reports. The deadline for applications is April 2, 2026.

Join KTH and contribute to cutting-edge research in sustainable chemical engineering, while benefiting from excellent working conditions and a vibrant academic community in Stockholm.
