About this position

This PhD position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology offers a unique opportunity to investigate radiation-induced chemical processes at oxide–aqueous interfaces, a topic crucial for nuclear energy system safety and performance. The research focuses on how ionising radiation drives complex reactions at the interface between water and oxide materials, affecting corrosion, radionuclide release, and the long-term stability of barriers throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. Despite their importance, these interfacial processes are not well understood at the molecular level.

The project combines the development of novel in situ experimental methodologies with mechanistic studies of adsorption, dissolution, and related surface reactions under irradiation. Surface-sensitive vibrational spectroscopy techniques, including sum frequency generation and total internal reflection (TIR) Raman, will be used to identify reactive intermediates, reaction pathways, and the dependence of interfacial chemistry on radiation dose and energy deposition. The research environment is internationally connected, providing opportunities to develop expertise at the intersection of radiation chemistry, surface science, and nuclear safety.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Eric Tyrode and Dr. Mats Jonsson, both experienced researchers in the field. The position is full-time and funded with a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement, including employee benefits. The employment is for up to four years, with possible renewal as per university regulations.

Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at second-cycle level). English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Experience with vibrational spectroscopy, non-linear optics, or laser spectroscopy methods is considered a merit. Candidates should be goal-oriented, able to work independently and collaboratively, and demonstrate a professional approach and analytical skills. Security clearance may be required for some positions.

Funding details
