About this position

The Division of Energy Systems at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is offering a doctoral position focused on developing climate resilient energy modelling methods. The project aims to create innovative approaches for planning electrification systems that remain reliable under climate hazards such as floods, droughts, heat extremes, storms, and wildfires. By embedding climate-risk and resilience considerations into energy planning models, the research will contribute to policy and planning for sustainable energy systems.

Supervised by Professor Viktoria Martin and Dr. Daniel Adshead, the doctoral student will collaborate with external partners, including the University of Oxford and stakeholders in national governments and energy organisations. The research environment is highly international and interdisciplinary, providing opportunities for stakeholder-oriented case studies and open-source research outputs.

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for postgraduate education in Sweden, including a second cycle degree (master's or equivalent) or at least 240 higher education credits, with 60 at second-cycle level, or equivalent knowledge. Relevant fields include energy systems, civil or environmental engineering, climate science, applied mathematics, or economic geography. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory.

Selection criteria emphasize personal skills such as independence, analytical problem-solving, collaboration, and professional approach. Candidates should demonstrate experience with climate modelling and hazard datasets, GIS modelling and spatial data handling (QGIS or ArcGIS), network analysis, system-level risk analysis, infrastructure interdependency analysis, programming (especially Python), and climate adaptation assessment and investment appraisal.

The position offers full-time employment for up to four years, with a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement and attractive employee benefits. The doctoral student is entitled to a workplace with many benefits and may perform certain tasks within their role, such as training and administration (up to 20%).

Applications must be submitted through KTH's recruitment system and include certified copies of diplomas, grades, and language certificates, CV, and a motivation letter (maximum 2 pages). Translations into English or Swedish are required if documents are not issued in these languages. Applications must be received by the closing date at midnight, CET/CEST.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is a leading international technical university, committed to advancing the transition towards a sustainable society. The university values equality, diversity, and equal opportunities, offering a creative and dynamic environment for growth and development.

For further information, contact Dr. Daniel Adshead at [email protected]. The application deadline is 23 June 2026.
