About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Digitilisation for the Water Sector, based in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Gothenburg, Sweden. The research project focuses on advancing digitalisation and automation in drinking water treatment, with an emphasis on real-time sensor systems, data analysis, and cost-effective water management. The Division of Water Environment Technology, within the research area of Water Quality and Resource Engineering, develops innovative methods and technologies to analyse, treat, and manage water quality, addressing challenges from contaminants to resource recovery.

As a doctoral student, you will evaluate the performance of real-time sensor systems in drinking water treatment applications, identify opportunities for cost-effective water management, and manage pilot projects in collaboration with Swedish water providers. The role involves handling large online datasets, performing laboratory water quality measurements, and validating sensor data. You will develop advanced data analysis workflows, document and archive research data according to FAIR principles, and participate in teaching activities up to 20% of your working hours. The position offers opportunities to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate research results both verbally and in writing.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (or equivalent 4-year Bachelor’s degree for non-Swedish applicants) in Environmental Engineering, Data Science, Environmental Chemistry, or a related discipline. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required, along with experience in data analysis and code-based processing workflows. A basic understanding of environmental analytical chemistry is expected. Additional qualifications that will strengthen your application include Swedish language proficiency (B2 level or higher), competence in scientific programming languages, and laboratory wet-chemistry experience. Security clearance may be required for entry into critical infrastructure facilities.

The position is fully funded, with a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month and full employee benefits. The appointment is for four years, with the possibility of extension by teaching up to one year. Doctoral studies require physical presence in Sweden throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment, generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish language courses for international students.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Required documents include your CV, personal letter, motivation, and thesis with transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The deadline for applications is June 7, 2026. For questions, contact Professor Kathleen Murphy at [email protected].

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and sustainability through global commitment and entrepreneurship.
