About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Digitilisation for the Water Sector, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, specifically the Division of Water Environment Technology, is at the forefront of research addressing challenges in the built and natural environment, including resource utilisation, pollution, climate change, and digitalisation. The research area Water Quality and Resource Engineering focuses on developing innovative methods and technologies to analyse, treat, and manage water quality, transforming contaminants into valuable resources.

This PhD project aims to advance digitalisation and automation in drinking water treatment by evaluating real-time sensor systems and identifying opportunities to make water treatment more cost-effective. The successful candidate will manage and implement pilot projects in collaboration with Swedish water providers, handle large online datasets, and perform laboratory water quality measurements to validate sensor data. The role requires strong communication and organisational skills, as well as the ability to develop and document advanced data analysis workflows in line with FAIR principles.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (120 or 60 credits) in Environmental Engineering, Data Science, Environmental Chemistry, or a related discipline. For international candidates, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is acceptable. Mandatory requirements include strong written and verbal English skills, experience in data analysis and code-based workflows, and a basic understanding of environmental analytical chemistry. Additional qualifications such as Swedish language proficiency (B2 level or higher), competence in scientific programming languages, and laboratory wet-chemistry experience are advantageous. Security clearance may be required for access to critical infrastructure facilities.

The position is fully funded for four years, with the possibility of extension by teaching up to one year. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month, and doctoral students at Chalmers are considered employees with access to comprehensive benefits. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inclusive working environment, with initiatives to promote gender balance and equality. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers.

To apply, submit your application in English via the online form, including your CV, personal letter, motivation, and thesis transcripts as PDF files (maximum 40 MB each). Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The application deadline is June 7, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Kathleen Murphy at [email protected].

This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about digitalisation, environmental engineering, and water quality, seeking to contribute to sustainable solutions in the water sector through advanced research and collaboration.
