About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in energy technology and policy, based in the Energy Technology and Policy (ENTAP) group within the Division of Physical Resource Theory. The group’s research focuses on how societies can transition towards sustainability, connecting technical and social sciences to address challenges such as climate change, energy transitions, and sustainable land use. The position is linked to the MISTRA Electrification project and offers a strong international network and tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration.
The doctoral project will focus on technology foresight for policy-driven low-carbon technologies. One position emphasizes developing data-driven approaches for probabilistic modelling of new technologies, while the other centers on policy analysis using machine-learning methods to investigate the effectiveness of different policies and policy mixes in accelerating technology change. Research topics include modelling the growth of electric vehicles, energy use from data centres, and analyzing the impact and dynamics of policy portfolios as technologies mature.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree (or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree for those educated outside Sweden) in energy studies, environmental science, complex systems studies, economics, public policy, political science, or related fields. Mandatory requirements include experience in energy transitions research, strong analytical skills in quantitative modelling, data analysis, and scientific computing (e.g., R, Python), and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Experience in technology foresight modelling or quantitative policy analysis is advantageous. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20% and extend to five years. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025), and doctoral students are employees with full benefits. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, with generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish language courses for international students.
To apply, prepare your application in English and attach all required documents as PDF files (CV, personal letter stating your focus, thesis, transcripts). Use the provided application form link. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The deadline for applications is May 4, 2026. For questions, contact Professor Jessica Jewell at [email protected].
