Karlstad University invites applications for a doctoral studentship in biology at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences, Faculty of Health, Science and Technology. The project is rooted in evolutionary biology and ecology, focusing on the origins and ecological consequences of sexual dimorphism, particularly niche divergence during early ecological speciation. Using Swedish salamanders (Triturus and Lissotriton) as a model system, the research investigates how sex-specific differences in body size and resource use influence interspecies interactions and natural selection, and whether ecological sexual dimorphism contributes to reproductive isolation and speciation.

The project employs experimental mesocosm approaches to study fitness effects of ecological interactions between males and females of co-occurring salamander species. Opportunities exist for complementary genetic and phenotypic studies of wild populations, as well as collaboration on salamander conservation in Sweden. The position involves both fieldwork and laboratory work, and is particularly suited for candidates interested in amphibian ecology, sexual dimorphism, niche evolution, and community ecology. There is substantial scope for the doctoral student to develop the project further, including genomics, behavioral studies, theory development, or eco-evolutionary research.

As a doctoral student, you will join a dynamic research environment in Evolutionary Biology at Karlstad University, collaborating with researchers in evolutionary genetics, ecology, and the River Ecology and Management Group (NRRV), which focuses on aquatic ecology. The doctoral programme comprises 240 credits for a Doctorate and 120 credits for a Licentiate. The appointment is a paid position, offering a combination of studies and work, with flexibility and independence in organising tasks. Teaching and administrative duties may be included, but will not exceed 20% of full-time.

Entry requirements include a second-cycle qualification (at least 240 credits, with 60 credits at second-cycle level), and at least 120 credits in biology including a master's-level degree project (minimum 15 credits). Quantitative skills (statistical theory, analysis, coding in R or similar, experimental design) are valued. Documented research interest and experience in evolution, ecology, or related fields, peer-reviewed publications or quality of master's thesis, fieldwork experience in freshwater ecology or amphibians, proficiency in English, valid driver's licence (Category B), and personal qualities such as independence, resourcefulness, communication, and collaboration are considered. Admission is based on individual assessment.

The position is fixed-term, initially one year with possible extensions up to five years full-time. Salary corresponds to the standard level for doctoral students and progresses according to local collective agreement.
