About this position

The Department of Engineering Mechanics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is seeking a doctoral student to join the Fluid Mechanics Division for a research project at the intersection of experimental fluid mechanics and artificial intelligence. The FLOW research community at KTH is renowned for its fundamental and applied work in fluid mechanics, and this position offers the opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge program focused on multi-scale urban turbulence and gust dynamics.

The project aims to uncover the fundamental mechanisms governing fine-scale, intermittent turbulence in urban environments, which is crucial for applications such as drone safety, pedestrian comfort, and urban wind energy. By integrating artificial intelligence with advanced wind tunnel experiments, the doctoral student will work to understand and predict urban turbulence patterns. The research will develop frameworks to inform urban planning, renewable energy strategies, and drone operations, addressing critical challenges in sustainable city design.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Ingrid Neunaber. The position is full-time and offers a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, along with employee benefits. The employment is for up to four years, with the possibility of renewal according to university regulations.

Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (including 60 second-cycle credits). English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is required. The ideal candidate will be goal-oriented, persevering, able to work independently and collaboratively, and capable of analyzing complex issues. Experience with experimental flow measurement methods (hot-wire anemometry, Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry) and machine learning is considered a merit. Personal skills are highly valued in the selection process.

To apply, candidates must submit a CV, application letter, certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of English proficiency, and representative publications or technical reports. All documents should be translated into English or Swedish if necessary. Applications must be submitted through KTH's recruitment system by March 31, 2026.
