About this position
Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Human Performance Modeling for Safe Vehicle Automation. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about understanding and modeling human capabilities to advance autonomous systems. The research will be conducted within the Division of Design & Human Factors, a group dedicated to human-centered design and safety-critical systems across transportation, healthcare, and automation domains.
The project centers on developing computational and probabilistic models to quantify driver performance limits, especially steering control under demanding conditions. By analyzing real-world driving data and modeling driver response dynamics, the research aims to describe what drivers can and cannot achieve in critical scenarios. These models will be extended to routine driving and used to inform and evaluate automated driving features, ultimately supporting safer and more user-centered vehicle automation. The work is carried out in collaboration with Volvo Car Corporation and academic partners.
As a doctoral student, you will develop statistical models, investigate their application to automated driving decision-making, collaborate with researchers and industry, publish scientific results, and present at international conferences. You will also take doctoral courses, contribute to teaching and supervision (up to 20% of working time), and participate actively in the research environment. The PhD program includes a Licentiatie degree after approximately 2.5 years and a PhD degree after 5 years.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (mechanical, electrical, biomedical, human factors engineering, or related discipline), or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree if educated outside Sweden. Strong programming skills (Python, R), experience with data processing and analysis, knowledge of statistics, and excellent English proficiency are required. Candidates should be analytical, curious, and able to work independently and collaboratively. Physical presence in Gothenburg is mandatory throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
The position is fully funded, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and includes employee benefits such as parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender balance and offers Swedish language courses for international students. The contract is fixed-term for four years, with the possibility to extend to five years if teaching duties are undertaken.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files (CV, personal letter, motivation, thesis, transcripts) via the provided application link. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is May 30, 2026.
For further information, contact Assistant Professor Linda Pipkorn ([email protected]) or Pontus Wallgren, Head of Division ([email protected]).
