About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student position in Material and Structural Mechanics, with a focus on Solid Mechanics and advanced fracture modeling for additively manufactured steel in nuclear reactor water environments. The project aims to develop predictive models for material degradation and failure, integrating advanced plasticity theories and nonlocal micromechanics-based fracture models within a finite element framework. Research activities include modeling the nucleation and evolution of damage under various loading conditions, materials characterization of post-processed 3D-printed stainless-steel specimens, and investigating the interplay between mechanical loading and electrochemical processes.

This position is part of a newly established, interdisciplinary research environment in nuclear technology at KTH, titled “Microstructural evolution, fatigue and fracture in metals from advanced manufacturing for long-term operation of nuclear reactors.” The environment is funded by the Swedish Research Council and involves collaboration with Karlstad University, Lund University, and the Swedish nuclear power industry. The team includes senior professors, junior researchers, and several PhD students, fostering a dynamic setting that bridges solid mechanics and materials science with strong industry links.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Jonas Faleskog and Dr. Mustafa Subasic. The position is based at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. The successful candidate will be employed full-time for up to four years, with a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement and access to employee benefits. The anticipated start date is August 17, 2026.

Applicants must hold a second cycle degree (e.g., master’s) or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at the second-cycle level), or possess equivalent qualifications. Proficiency in English equivalent to English B/6 is required. Selection criteria include the ability to work independently, collaborate effectively, maintain a professional approach, and analyze complex issues. Personal skills are highly valued in the selection process.

To apply, submit your application through KTH’s recruitment system by April 16, 2026. Required documents include a CV, application letter, diplomas and grades, proof of language proficiency, and representative publications or technical reports. For further information, contact Dr. Jonas Faleskog at [email protected].

Join KTH and contribute to cutting-edge research in solid mechanics and materials science, supporting the long-term operation of nuclear power plants through innovative engineering solutions.
